What Is WritingCards?

WritingCards is a 10+ year archive of handwritten index cards from working Hollywood screenwriters. At film festivals, guild events, and screenwriting conferences, we hand a blank card and a Sharpie to professional writers and ask them to share one piece of advice for fellow writers.

The result is a collection of 418 handwritten cards from the writers behind some of the most beloved films and television shows of the last three decades — raw, personal, and unfiltered.

Where the Cards Come From

Cards have been collected at:

Austin Film Festival (AFF) — our most prolific source, going back to 2014.
SXSW — from film, TV, and interactive writers.
WGA Events — Writers Guild of America West screenings and panels.
Scriptnotes Podcast — live events hosted by John August and Craig Mazin.
WritingPad — Los Angeles screenwriting community events.

Why Handwritten?

Anyone can tweet a quote. A handwritten card is something different — it takes a moment of genuine thought, carries the writer's handwriting, their personality, sometimes a doodle. Every card is one-of-a-kind.
